Why Does Ginger Turn Yellow After Applying Fresh Chicken Manure?

Ginger is a nutrient-demanding crop that responds well to organic manures. However, using fresh (uncomposted) chicken manure can do more harm than good. Many farmers notice that ginger leaves start turning yellow a few days after application. This is usually due to the improper use of fresh poultry manure. Why Does This Happen? Fresh chicken manure contains very high levels of nitrogen, especially in the form of ammonia, along with soluble salts. When it is applied directly to the soil, it can: Burn young ginger roots due to excess ammonia. Increase soil salinity, making it difficult for roots to absorb water. Reduce beneficial microbial activity around the root zone. Damage feeder roots, leading to poor nutrient uptake. As a result, the ginger plant becomes stressed, and the leaves begin to turn yellow. Symptoms Farmers may observe the following symptoms: Yellowing of older leaves first, followed by younger leaves. Slow plant growth and reduced tillering. Leaf tip burning or drying. Wilting during hot hours despite adequate soil moisture. Weak root development. How to Prevent This Problem To avoid leaf yellowing caused by fresh chicken manure: Never apply fresh chicken manure directly to ginger fields. Compost the manure for 45–60 days before application. Mix the composted manure well with the soil before planting. Apply only the recommended quantity based on soil fertility. Maintain proper soil moisture after manure application. Instead of fresh chicken manure, use 8–10 tonnes of well-decomposed Farmyard Manure (FYM) per acre during land preparation. FYM improves soil structure, enhances microbial activity, releases nutrients gradually, and supports healthy root and rhizome development without causing root burn. What Should Farmers Do If Yellowing Has Already Started? If fresh chicken manure has already been applied and the crop is showing yellowing: Irrigate the field thoroughly to help leach excess salts and ammonia from the root zone. Avoid applying additional nitrogen fertilizers until the plants recover. Apply organic microbial products such as Trichoderma or beneficial biofertilizers to improve root health. Apply a balanced foliar nutrient spray containing micronutrients if nutrient deficiency symptoms persist. Monitor the crop for secondary fungal infections, as stressed plants are more susceptible to diseases. Best Practice Chicken manure is an excellent organic fertilizer only after proper composting. Well-decomposed poultry manure improves soil fertility, increases organic matter, enhances microbial activity, and supports healthy ginger growth without causing root damage. For the best results, farmers should prefer well-decomposed FYM as the primary organic manure. If poultry manure is used, ensure it is thoroughly composted for 45–60 days before application. Never apply fresh poultry manure directly to ginger fields. Conclusion Fresh chicken manure should never be used directly in ginger cultivation. Its high ammonia and salt content can burn roots, resulting in yellow leaves, poor growth, and reduced yield. Using well-decomposed FYM or properly composted poultry manure is a safer and more effective practice, as it improves soil health, promotes strong root growth, and ensures healthy ginger plants with better yields.
