Flower drop is a common problem in tomato cultivation. The healthy tomato plants produce flowers, but they just dry up and drop off from the plants without producing fruits.

The reasons for dropping of flowers in tomato are many, but the most common is because of excessively high or low temperatures and excessively high or low relative humidity.

Apart from the above, the other causes may be due to improper pollination, too much or too little nitrogen, lack of water and the disease infections also causes flower drop in tomato.

To control flower drops in tomato

  1. Use resistant varieties which have got wide climatic adaptability or select the season specific varieties.
  2. Provide only adequate amount of fertilizers.
  3. Provide proper and adequate irrigation (lack of water will interfere with nitrogen uptake)
  4. Spray the crop with growth regulators which makes the plants to resist against various kinds of physiological stresses (Biotic and abiotic ) which may avoid flower drop.

 Spray with

Planofix 1mL / 4.5 L + Nagastha 0.25 mL / L may help in avoiding flower drop in Tomato under adverse environmental conditions.

Major diseases of Paddy [Oryza sativa]

Paddy is infected by majorly two pathogens. Fungus and Bacteria, how ever paddy may also be infected by virus.

Fungal diseases:

Paddy Blast [Pyricularia grisea (P.oryzae)]

Plants shows the symptoms of blast appearance on the leaves, stems and necks.

Sheath Blight: Rhizoctonia solani:

Elliptical or oval or irregular greenish to greyish spots are developed, later developing to bigger sized whitish grey spots surrounded by blackish brown or purple brown border.

Management of Chilli Virus disease

   Chilli viruses 

Chilli crop is vulnerable to deadly viral infections like Leaf curl virus [Gemini virus], Tobacco mosaic virus and TOSPO [tomato spotted wilt virus].

   Chilli viruses 1

Following combinations may be sprayed to manage both sucking pests [Vectors] as well as bind or develop resistance of plants against viral infections in the plants.  7 days intervals is required in between the sprays.

First combination

V-Bind 3 mL/L + Magnum Mn 0.5 gm/L  Sambrama 1 tablet / 15 Liter of water + Splash 2 gm/L + Pegasus 2 gm/L

Important Note

Use of more and more nitrogen to the chilli crop leads to the susceptibility o chilli plants to the viral infections especially ammoniacal nitrogen present in the fertilizers and other inputs which are supplemented to the crops will increase the viral infections. Amides formed in the plant sap from ammoniacal nitrogen sources will help the virus to multiply at higher rates increasing the symptoms.

Avoid Poultry manure, because poultry manure contains large quantities of ammoniacal nitrogen which Poultry manure need to be decomposed for minimum 6 months and be mixed 50: 50 red soil and poultry manure respectively before application.

Urea and Ammonium Sulphate contains ammoniacal nitrogen, better to limit of avoid using these fertilizers.

Amino acids supplements through sprays and soil drenching may be avoided to suppress the viral multiplications in the plant system.

Supplementation of Manganese micronutrients through foliar sprays and soil application will help in managing the viral infections not only in chilli but also in vegetable crops.

Manage sucking insects in Chilli and other vegetable seedling nurseries

Manage viral diseases of Papaya plants

Papaya (Carica papaya) crop is vulnerable to deadly viral diseases like Papaya ring spot virus [PRSV] and Papaya leaf curl virus [PLCV].

Inspite nitrate form nitrogen sources can be applied to supply the nitrogen to the growing crop.

Infected crops may be sprayed with plant growth stimulating agents for papaya crop to manage the virus disease. Following combinations may be tried weekly or 10 days once.

Killing root knot nematodes in Bhendi [Okra] crops

      Root knot nematoes in Bhendi roots

Incidence of plant parasitic nematodes is more severe because of congenial conditions for nematodes to multiply and invade like higher temperature, humidity and high use of inputs like fertilizers and plant growth promoters. Bhendi plants are also susceptible to nematodes due to continuous cultivation.

Regular applications of neem cakes in to the root zone will make the plant parasitic nematodes to move away from the root zone.

Virus infection in vegetable crops? This may be also one of the reason

            Viral infections in capsicum

Vegetables are grown in all seasons. Farmers are facing problem of viral diseases in majority of the vegetable crops.

Farmers apply nitrogen in different forms to their crops in the form of Urea, Ammonium Sulphate, 19:19:19; 15:15:15;, 17:17:17 and other water soluble fertilisers like  19:19:19, 20:20:20, 28:28:00 and so on which are rich in ammonium nitrogen.

Farmers also have the practice of providing traditional manures from poultry, sheep and goat litters which are rich sources of ammonium nitrogen. Some of the growers are also allowing sheep or goats to stay during nights on the fallow land so that the litter (drop out excreta) may become manure to the upcoming crop.

Supplementing more of ammonium nitrogen to the plants may not only provoke the viruses but also make [plants vulnerable for the attack of plant viruses during entire crop growth and development stages.

  • Avoid providing or applying larger quantities of nitrogen sources especially those with ammonium nitrogen.
  • Follow soil test based and crop specific fertiliser programs with balanced nutrition schedules
  • Use biofertilisers in the soil to convert the forms of nitrogen to make it most suitable for better crop health.

Managing the Locust attack

Locust (Schistocerca gregaria) which is also called the short-horned grasshopper has arrived in some northern states of India and destroying the crops. The attack of the locusts will be in swarms and are not stable at place.

The insecticidal sprays application may not help in this situation as they won’t stay at same place for longer times. They are voracious feeders and in no time all the foliage will be consumed and the plants won’t have the surface to be sprayed with any insecticides.

Expecting the locust swarm and application of insecticides which can deter the locust and make all the plants parts turn non palatable for the locust to eat and survive may help to manage.

Reports also say the application of biological agent, entamopathogenic fungi Metarrhizium anisoplea on plants and on locust insects may invade and kill them. The fungi Metarrhizium anisoplea works better in night temperatures more than 20 0C and less than 38 0C day temperatures. The fungi once fell on the locust body have more chances of invading the locust and kill.

Bactrocera dorsalis and other Bactrocera spp. fruit flies are common invasive insects on mango (Mangifera indica) fruits which can cause the remarkable crop losses by infesting prematured and matured fruits.

The flies’ implants the eggs in to the prematured fruit, and the larvae or maggots develops in the flesh and fruits will lose the asthecity and marketable value.

Managing mango fruit flies

Effective control of Brinjal fruit and shoot borer

Brinjal fruit and shoot borer (Leucinodes orbonalis) is very important insect of brinjal crop that infests shoot as well as fruits. Brinjal fruit and shoot borer makes holes in shoots as well as in fruits.

Mealybugs control in Guava and other crops

Guava plants are more vulnerable to mealy bugs. Mealy bug is a sucking pest, both nymphs and adults suck the juice from leaves, flowers, fruits and succulent plant parts. Which results in withering, yellowing of leaves, premature fruit drop, hampering and destroying plant’s growth.

              Root rot infection in plants

    Managing Collar/Crown and root rots in crops

Pre - raised plants of crops like tomato, chilli, brinjal and other plants with small sized seeds are planted on the main field. These plants are more prone to soil diseases especially the rot diseases which damages roots as well as collars of the plants. The causal organisms are mainly the fungal pathogens from spp. of Fusarium, Pythium ..etc.,

  • Regulation of irrigation or moisture during treatment must be taken care, dry conditions are recommended.

Prepare the mixture of Krilaxyl power 0.75 gm/L + Bactinash 0.4 gm/L and drench on the collar or crown and allow the mixture also moves towards the root zone to kill the pathogens at the root zone twice at 7 days intervals.

Whiteflies [Bemisia tabaci]  are one of the major pests of bhendi, which can cause 50% crop loss. They can seriously injure plants by sucking juices, which makes leaves to turn yellow, shrivel and drop premature. White flies are vectors which spread yellow vein mosaic virus which is major disease of bhendi crop.

Biological Control of Brinjal root grubs or Chafer [OXYCETONIA VERSICOLOR]

Prevent and manage the dangerous leaf miner/Pinworm TUTA ABSOLUTA on Tomato

For effective control TUTA ABSOLUTA leaf miners/Pinworms all the stages of insect need to consider.

             Tuta Absoluta on tomato fruits

Egg stage and larval stage insects can be killed by use of Ovicidal insecticides like neem oil Ekalux 2 mL/L + [Econeem plus 1 % - 1 mL/L OR Neemark 1 % 1 mL/L] and translaminar mode of action insecticides like Abacin 1 mL/L. This spray also controls the adult flies.

                  Controlling the TUTA ABSOLUTA eggs

Dupont Benevia 200 mL per acre spray at 20 to 25 days of crop stage will control the leaf miner infestation.

                          Prevention and control of TUTA ABSOLUTA on Tomato crop

Fumigants and systemic insecticides can be sprayed [Predator 3 mL/L OR Durmet] 3 mL/L or soil application with Cartap Hydrochloride 4 % [Caldan] 5 kg per acre will kill the pupa.

Benevia – a novel insecticide for TUTA ABSOLUTA control

Benevia – CYANTRANILIPROLE technical has broad spectrum effect on leaf eating and leaf mining insects. Benevia  can be sprayed on crops for the management of leaf miners. Benevia can also manage leaf feeding caterpillars.

Chilli fruit rot and dieback is a fungal infection caused by COLLETOTRICHUM CAPSICI. This disease is more severe and observed at the flowering stage of chilli growth.

Flowers start drying up with shriveled stalks and end up in profuse shedding. The fruits outer skin shows the soft rottening initially and the spots turns black reducing the quality of the fruits.
