• Phosphorus (P) is an essential nutrient for all forms of life and is one of the major macronutrients for plants. In agricultural practices, millions of tons of phosphatic fertilizers are intentionally applied to soils each year for plant growth. To be the most effective, efficient, and environmentally favorable, however, the entire applied mass of the phosphatic fertilizers should remain available to plants near the root zone. Unfortunately, a large portion of soluble inorganic phosphatic fertilizers applied to the soil is immobilized rapidly and becomes unavailable to plants. The immobilization of P presents serious problems for plant growth.
