Damping Off in Tomato: Causes, Symptoms & Control

Damping off in tomato is a nursery-stage disease that can wipe out a seed tray within days, striking before the crop has even had a chance to establish. It's caused by soil-borne fungi like Pythium and Rhizoctonia, and shows up as either pre-emergence rot, where seeds fail to sprout, or post-emergence collapse, where young seedlings topple over with a thin, water-soaked stem at the soil line. Warm, overwatered, crowded nursery beds are exactly where it spreads fastest. Since a collapsed seedling can't be saved, treating the seed and nursery soil before sowing is the most reliable way to keep it out of a tomato crop.

Signs to Watch For

  • Poor, patchy germination: seeds rot in the soil before sprouting, leaving gaps in the seed tray or nursery bed.
  • Sudden seedling collapse: young plants that looked fine the day before topple over and lie flat on the soil.
  • A thin, water-soaked pinch at the stem base ("wire stem"): this constriction at the soil line is what causes the seedling to fall while the leaves stay green.
  • Soft, brown roots: healthy white roots turn discoloured and mushy when the disease has taken hold.
  • Patchy spread: the problem usually starts in the wettest or most crowded part of the tray and spreads outward from there.

Causes

Damping off in tomato is caused mainly by Pythium aphanidermatum and Rhizoctonia solani, soil-borne fungi that thrive in overwatered, poorly drained, and overcrowded nursery conditions. Reused or unsterilized potting soil, cool damp weather, and excess nitrogen in the seedbed all make an outbreak more likely.

Cultural and Mechanical Control Measures

  • Avoid overwatering: keep the nursery bed moist but never waterlogged.
  • Improve drainage: raised beds or trays with good drainage holes cut down on standing moisture.
  • Avoid overcrowding: sow with enough spacing so air can move between seedlings.
  • Use light, well-drained potting media: avoid heavy, waterlogged soils in the nursery.
  • Solarize the nursery soil before sowing: cover the bed with clear plastic for 4–6 weeks during peak summer heat.
  • Start with certified, disease-free seed from a trusted source.
  • Don't reuse the same nursery soil season after season — rotate the site or use fresh, sterilized mix.
  • Remove collapsed seedlings promptly so the fungus doesn't spread to healthy ones nearby.
  • Keep tools and trays clean, and avoid working in wet beds right after watering or rain.

Trichoderma viride 1.0% WP

Trichoderma viride is a beneficial fungus that reaches the seed and root zone before the disease-causing pathogens do. It parasitizes the fungi behind damping off, competing with them for space and nutrients and breaking down their cell walls. It's most effective as a seed treatment before sowing and as a nursery bed drench, forming a protective zone around the root from germination onward.

Product Recommendation

Pseudomonas fluorescens 1.0% WP

This beneficial bacterium colonizes the root zone ahead of the pathogen, competing for space and nutrients and producing natural compounds that suppress Pythium and Rhizoctonia. Applied as a seed treatment and nursery soil drench, it also strengthens the seedling's own resistance during its most fragile early weeks.
