Leaves turning dusty orange-brown? That's rust. It won't kill the plant outright, but it eats into the leaf, cuts sunlight uptake, and quietly pulls down your tonnage and sugar recovery by harvest.

How to Spot It

  • Small, raised orange-brown streaks on the underside of leaves
  • Streaks merge and leaf starts drying from the tip
  • Whole field can look scorched in bad cases, without any drought
  • Spreads fastest in humid weather with cool nights

Why It Keeps Coming Back

  • Same variety planted season after season
  • Cane planted too dense, canopy stays wet
  • Poor field drainage
  • Spores blow in easily from nearby infected fields

Solution to Treat Rust in Sugarcane

Azoxystrobin 18.2% + Difenoconazole 11.4% SC is the go-to for sugarcane rust. Azoxystrobin stops new spores from germinating, Difenoconazole clears up infection already inside the leaf. It also controls red rot and smut, so one spray covers three problems.

Other Practices to Keep Rust Away

  • Choose resistant varieties
  • Keep proper row spacing so the canopy doesn't stay wet and dense
  • Improve field drainage, rust favours standing moisture
  • Detrash regularly to open up airflow around the base
  • Avoid excess nitrogen, it encourages soft, disease-prone growth
  • Remove and destroy badly infected leaves to cut down spore spread

Note: Spray at the first orange streaks, don't wait for the field to look scorched. Keeping rows a little open for airflow also helps.
