The Digital Agriculture Mission was approved by the Union Cabinet in September 2024 to build a unified digital identity system for Indian farmers, known as AgriStack. It was launched because farmers were repeatedly submitting the same identity, land, and crop documents to different departments for different schemes, creating duplication, delays, and errors. AgriStack changes this by verifying a farmer's identity and land records once, creating a Farmer ID that every government department can then read from the same way a bank, a procurement centre, or a subsidy portal can now instantly confirm who a farmer is and what they cultivate.

Digital Agriculture Mission Overview

  • Scheme Name – Digital Agriculture Mission, with AgriStack as its core digital infrastructure
  • Scheme Approval Date – Approved by the Union Cabinet in September 2024
  • Scheme Fund Allocated – ₹2,817 crore, targeting digital identities for 11 crore farmers over three years (6 crore in FY 2024-25, 3 crore in FY 2025-26, and 2 crore in FY 2026-27)
  • Type of Scheme – Central Government initiative, implemented through Central-State partnerships; 19 states had signed MoUs with the Ministry of Agriculture as of the latest count, with over 10.31 crore Farmer IDs created nationwide as of August 2026
  • Helpline No – Kisan Call Centre, 1800-180-1551; state-specific queries can also be raised at the nearest Common Service Centre (CSC) or Agriculture Department office
  • States Covered – All-India rollout, implemented state-by-state through respective AgriStack portals

Objectives of the Scheme

  • Create a verified, unique digital identity (Farmer ID) for every farmer in India
  • Eliminate repetitive paperwork and duplicate verification across government schemes and departments
  • Build a comprehensive digital profile of farmers, integrating personal details, land records, crops cultivated, and agricultural assets
  • Improve the speed, transparency, and accuracy of scheme and subsidy delivery
  • Conduct a nationwide Digital Crop Survey to maintain accurate, real-time crop data

Key Features of the Digital Agriculture Mission

  • Built around three foundational registries: the Farmer Registry, Geo-Referenced Village Maps, and the Crop Sown Registry, created and maintained by State Governments
  • Each farmer receives a unique Farmer ID linked with Aadhaar, land records, and other agricultural information
  • Follows a federated architecture — states retain ownership of farmer data, and information is collected only with the farmer's consent
  • Developed in compliance with the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, and its 2025 Rules
  • Digital Crop Survey rolled out nationwide in phases, covering 400 districts in its first year of implementation
  • Integrates with major schemes such as PM-KISAN, Kisan Credit Card verification, crop insurance, and MSP procurement
  • Registration is available through state-specific AgriStack portals, Common Service Centres (CSCs), Agriculture Department offices, and Gram Panchayat camp mode
  • State-level mobile apps (such as Farmer Registry Gujarat, MP, UP, Maharashtra, Assam) support registration and status tracking

Benefits to Farmers

  • One-time identity and land verification means farmers no longer need to prove their status repeatedly for different schemes
  • Faster access to government schemes, including quicker PM-KISAN verification and subsidy disbursement
  • Simplified crop insurance services and easier Kisan Credit Card verification
  • Reduced paperwork and fewer trips to government offices, since land and identity data is stored digitally and reused
  • Improved accuracy of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), reducing duplicate or fraudulent beneficiary records
  • Better access to digital agriculture services, including AI-enabled farm advisories and pest surveillance tools

Limitations of the Scheme

  • Rollout is state-by-state, so Farmer ID availability and features can vary depending on how far a state has progressed
  • Registration and verification require Aadhaar and matching land records; mismatches can lead to delays or manual review
  • Concerns remain about the digital divide — poor rural broadband, uneven smartphone access, and low digital literacy could exclude some farmers
  • Systems built primarily around legal landowners may need careful handling to also recognise tenant farmers and actual cultivators
  • As a large, evolving digital infrastructure project, some features and integrations are still being expanded across states

Documents Required

  • Aadhaar Card (mandatory for eKYC and identity verification)
  • Mobile number, preferably linked to Aadhaar, for OTP verification
  • Land ownership documents — Record of Rights (RoR) such as Khasra, Khatauni, Gata Number, or 7/12 extract, depending on the state
  • Bank passbook or account number, for Direct Benefit Transfer linkage
  • Passport-size photograph
  • Tenant farming proof, where applicable

How to Register for a Farmer ID Under the Digital Agriculture Mission

  1. Visit your state-specific AgriStack Farmer Registry portal, or approach the nearest Common Service Centre (CSC) or Agriculture Department office for assisted registration.
  2. Select the "Farmer" option and create a new user account if registering for the first time.
  3. Complete Aadhaar-based eKYC by entering your Aadhaar number and verifying it with the OTP sent to your linked mobile number.
  4. Once verified, your basic details will be auto-fetched from Aadhaar; select "Register as Farmer" and fill in your social category and other required details.
  5. Add your land parcel details and upload supporting documents such as your photograph and bank passbook.
  6. Review all entered information and submit; you will receive an Enrollment ID, and after verification, a unique Farmer ID will be issued and sent to your registered mobile number.

Conclusion

The Digital Agriculture Mission and its AgriStack backbone mark one of the most significant digital reforms in Indian agriculture, aiming to give every farmer a single verified identity that works across every scheme and department. With over 10 crore Farmer IDs already created and more states coming onboard, the mission is steadily reducing the paperwork burden that has long slowed down subsidy and scheme delivery. As rollout continues, registering for a Farmer ID is becoming an increasingly essential step for farmers to access government benefits smoothly.
