Despite poor rains, Kharif crop planting increases by 5 per cent
Kharif crops have been planted on 80 per cent of the total arable land, an increase of 5 per cent over the previous year, even after the weather office predicted a below-average monsoon this year. The season's rain deficit widened to 7 per cent from 6 per cent a day earlier after below-normal rain on Friday.
The total area sown as of August 7 was 84.74 million hectares compared with 80.84 million hectares at the time last year, the agriculture ministry said.
