Strategies to manage Yellow Rust Disease in Wheat
Wheat is one of the most popular and important winter seasons crops of India, which is sown during the month of November and harvested between March and April. Wheat has rich source of protein, and is the staple food in the country. India is one of the leading producers of wheat in the world, however in the recent years, Yellow rust in wheat has emerged as serious disease in the country, which has become a threat to the wheat growing farmers.
Pathogen causing Yellow rust in Wheat
Yellow rust in wheat also known as Stripe rust is caused by the pathogen Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici. The disease affects the plants at different growth stages from vegetative to final maturity stage.
Causes of Yellow rust in Wheat:

- Cool climatic conditions with humid environment including rains and fog during growing season will influence the growth and spreading of the disease
- When the temperature of just 3-4 ° C higher compared to normal, along with rain or foggy environment is found very much conducive for yellow rust in wheat. The effect of temperature variation will be seen after one month.
- The disease even spreads through wind
- Heavy dew or intermittent rains will increase the disease severity
- Sowing the same type of wheat varieties for many years in the disease prone areas
- Growing varieties which are not recommended for that particular regions become more susceptible or acts as spreading agents
- The pathogen spores will survive in wheat as dormant mycelium in cool climatic conditions
Symptoms of Yellow rust in Wheat:

Small bright, yellow-coloured stripes (pustules) appear parallelly all along the venations of leaf blade, leaf sheaths, spikes, spikelets, glumes and awns

The mature pustules will break open and release yellow orange masses of fungal spores. As the plant matures, the infected leaves and tissues turns to yellowish, then brown and later dry.

It affects the photosynthesis activity, as a result it leads to stunted growth with weakened plants, shrivelled grains with only few spikes, very less grains per spike and reduced grain weight.

Ultimately it can cause around 50% yield loss, but under severe conditions can cause 100% yield loss.

Preventive measures to avoid Yellow Rust in Wheat
- Use only registered, good quality seeds from genuine source
- Select resistant and region-specific varieties for sowing
- Seed treatment with bio-agents like Trichoderma viridae @ 4 gm/kg of seeds ((Ecoderma or Sanjeevni or Multiplex Nisarga or Treat Bio-Fungicide or Alderm @)
- Follow crop rotation

Management of Yellow rust in Wheat
i). Preventive/Prophylactic spray applications: The prophylactic application of below mentioned Strobilurin (Strobins) class of fungicides gives excellent results in preventing the disease incidence.

Note: Spray application can be taken once or twice after 30 days of sowing @ at 20-25 days interval.
ii). Curative Measures:
Curative spray applications after the incidence of disease with Triazoles class of fungicides will give excellent results. Even, the combinations of both Strobilurin and Triazoles class fungicides can be sprayed which gives best results in controlling yellow rust in wheat.
